Honouring the best of the best in film, television, drama and comedy, the prestigious annual ceremony avoided tedium and clichés thanks to Fey and Poehler who proved to be arguably among the funniest and most entertaining presenters in the event’s history. The duo alone made the awards show well worth the watch, taking shots at the star-studded Golden Globes gathering while managing to stay classy and keep it above the belt.
Among those who copped it included Matt Damon who got labelled “basically a garbage person” in comparison to the A-listers in the room, as well as George Clooney and his film Gravity, with Poehler describing the plot as “basically the story
of how George Clooney would rather float away into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age”.
The 71st Golden Globe Awards saw Fey and Poehler as hosts for the second year in a row, and with a bit of luck and common sense from the HFPA [Hollywood Foreign Press Association], they’ll be back again to host next year’s event too.
And while Fey and Poehler’s flawless delivery was the real winner on the night, the actual Golden Globes were handed to the likes of American Hustle for Best Motion Picture (Music Or Comedy), as well as Amy Adams for Best Actress (Music Or Comedy) and Jennifer Lawrence for Best Supporting
Actress.
12 Years A Slave earned the Best Picture (Drama) award, while Jared Leto won Best Supporting Actor, Leonardo Di Caprio got Best Actor (Music Or Comedy), Matthew McConaughey picked up Best Actor (Drama) and Cate Blanchett took home the Best Actress (Drama) award.
Breaking Bad and Brooklyn Nine-Nine also picked up the top television honours while Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Robin Wright (House Of Cards) and Amy Poehler (Parks And Recreation) all won the Golden Globe for their acting. The special Cecil B DeMille Award went to Woody Allen this year for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.
