No11 – Hurst’s dodgy goal v Germany (1966)
In the 1966 final, England and West Germany were tied 2-2 at full-time.
In extra time, English striker Geoff Hurst pounced on a cross and fired goalward only for his shot to ricochet off the under-side of the bar, down onto the line and out.
The goal was awarded but has remained a point of conjecture ever since. Was it a goal or wasn’t it? Did the ball cross the line or didn’t it?
Luckily, England scored a fourth goal, again through Hurst – his third for the match – to remove any sense that West Germany were truly cheated of victory.
