West Germany faced Austria in the final group game and a win for West Germany would see both teams proceed to the next round.
After West Germany took an early lead, both teams shut up shop, neither trying to score for the next 80 minutes.
It was an obvious fix and Algeria, the side who missed out as a result, protested, but Fifa let the result stand.
Nowadays, the final group games are played at the same time making such blatant, cynical collusion impossible.
