Whatever your maddest of inner impulses, you can unleash them at Mac Daddy of out-there festivals, Nevada’s Burning Man. Music, dance, arts and heaps of hallucinogenics are the order of play here.
Why: Over the 20-odd years that Burning Man has been running (the origins are a little hazy) it has developed cult status. The basic idea is that a community of around 50,000 establish a temporary metropolis in the desert called Black Rock City. They party there for a week and then burn it down.
Do it because: You’ll get the chance to witness the traditional burning of ‘The Man’ from which the festival gets its name. A huge effigy around 40ft tall, it’s sent up in flames on the final night in a symbol of personal release and self-expression.
