You’re invited into a reconstruction of a 13th-century Viking village, populated by fancy dress enthusiasts, where you’ll see staged skirmishes, replica Viking ships and, somewhat incongruously, an aerobatic show. Weird.
Why: To celebrate Scottish prowess in the face of the Vikings, as shown at the Battle of Largs, which ended with Norway ceding all claim to the Western Isles. Go Scots!
A re-enactment of the famous battle is scheduled for the last day and will climax with a massive fireworks display.
Do it because: It’s easier to get to than Up Helly Aa in the Shetland Islands, the Viking fire festival that lights up in January.
Plus it’s probably the only time you can claim to have been to a Viking car boot sale, which appears in this year’s programme.
