It’s been pulled, some would say quite rightly, after an online petition against it gathered 11,000 signatures.
“Safety in Paradise” shows bikini-clad Sports Illustrated swimwear models dishing out safety advice and has, as you’d expect, had a lot of hits on Youtube (some 5.8 million views actually).
The Change.org petition launched by Aussie Natasha Young states that “a safety video is to alert passengers on what to do in an emergency; it should not be an excuse to objectify the sexualised female body” and adds that the video “completely disregards passengers who find it offensive for religious reasons, who have body image struggles, who are parents concerned about their children’s impressionable nature, who believe women deserve more respect”.
It labelled it vid “culturally insensitive”.
In a statement to Buzzfeed Australia, Air New Zealand said the video wasn’t removed because of the petition or the massive online backlash and that it always intended to remove the video after it had run its course.
Yeah, okay…
