The victims, whose bodies were found with serious injuries early on Monday, were a 23-year-old woman believed to be from Norfolk and a 24-year-old man from Jersey.

Sky News said police had cordoned off the beach and shut down ferry routes to and from the mainland, while the London Evening Standard reported that the female victim is believed to have been raped before she was killed.

The BBC said that UK Foreign Office was urgently investigating the reports and that Thai police believe the pair were attacked with a hoe.

“We have been contacted by the British Embassy concerning the reported death of a 24-year-old Jerseyman in Thailand,” States of Jersey police said. “We are currently co-operating with both the Thai and British Authorities who will be leading the investigation.

“No further details will be provided by the States of Jersey Police at this time until the family have been spoken to.”

A murder investigation is ongoing.
