Holidaymaker David Tagg, 36, was celebrating New Year in Siolim, 15 km from Panaji, the capital of Goa.

His body was found on Monday in the flat he was renting.

Police are refusing to comment on the cause of death until a postmortem has been carried out.

An official said: “They had come to Goa on the year end. The postmortem of the deceased will make the cause of death clear.”

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: “We can confirm the death of a British national on January 2 in Goa, India.

“We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time.”
