Dave Richards and Nathan Podmore were circled three times by the shark in waters near Geraldton.
“It scared the hell out us,” said Richards.
“I felt some water displaced behind me, I think, and turned around and there was the back section of the shark,
“I probably only saw the back metre of the shark – there’s only one shark that could have been.
“In the water it looked huge, but in hindsight it was probably about three and a half, four metres,” he said.
Video captured by Podmore’s helmet-mounted camera shows the shark circling and as it turns towards the pair Richards pokes it in the side with a spear.
The shark retreats into the sea’s blue ether as the pair scramble for their boat.
Unfortunately a surfer off the same coast later that week wasn’t as lucky.
