Cameron became the first person to explore the trench, which is fifty time larger than the Grand Canyon and as deep as Mount Everest is tall.
Cameron spent just over three hours below the surface before his return in the specially designed, “Deepsea Challenger,” submarine.
However a fault on the arm of the sub meant he wasn’t able to recover the sediment and rock samples from the trench.
“I had taken a sediment core sample but unfortunately when the hydraulics failed I wasn’t able to close the sample door and most of that sample washed out before I got to the surface,” said Cameron.
