The Emirates-sponsored cable car system will be the first urban one of its kind in the UK, and will ferry people across the river between Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks.
The cars will glide across the river, carrying Olympics spectators between two of the games’ venues, the O2 Arena and the ExCel centre. The 34 cars, which can each carry 10 people, will run every ten seconds.
The cable car system has come under fire from some quarters though, with London mayoral candidate Ken Livingstone criticising what he sees as the “most expensive cable car in history”.
The cross-Thames transport system was originally budgeted at £25million and was to be funded by private investors, however the budget has spiralled to more than double with public money forming part of its funding now.
