Breakfast spot: Joseph Brot
For breakfast the Viennese way, and a contemporary food spot in the city, start your day at Joseph Brot. The Wiener Frühstück of bread and a soft boiled egg, is served with Kipferl – a Viennese croissant served with apricot jam. For hungrier stomachs there are plenty of options including a satisfying Eggs Benedikt and delicious pastries.
Culture spotting: A quick 10-minute walk will take you to the Hundertwasser Haus and Kunst Haus Wien, for beautiful yet quirky architecture. Be prepared for bright colours, even on the rainiest day.

Step back in time: The Gasthaus – (tavern)
Set away from the main streets off the Ringstrasse and down a side road is an old traditional spot for lunch – Gasthaus Ubl. With wooden panelling, green and white tablecloths, it will feel like you’ve gone back a few decades. Try the Wiener Schnitzel, an Austrian dish with veal, or one of the daily specials. Our Schopfbratten with Sauerkraut and Semmelknödel – roasted pork with bread dumplings – was surprisingly tender. This is the place to tuck away your busy itineraries while you relax.

Vollpension
A trip to Vollpension is like taking a trip to your grandparents living room. From kitsch decor (there’s no other description for it) to warming dishes, you can’t go wrong here. We had Rindsuppe mit Fritatten – beef soup with pancake strips and stayed long enough to admire the many framed photos, cushions, seats and knick-knacks.
Culture spotting: Take a trip to Naschmarkt for a wander through the many food stalls and finish off with the flea market.

Coffee culture: Cafe Central
A cup of coffee, a glass of water and a newspaper on a marble top surface. This is all you need in the Viennese coffee houses that are so inherent to Viennese culture. There are so many coffeehouses in the inner city, so get exploring! You can squeeze at least two in per day. Head to Cafe Central for a beautiful setting dating from 1876 with beautiful grand arches and high ceilings. Yes it’s quite touristy, but it’s cakes and pastries galore. Sharing is key.

The dumplings: Knödleria
Walking through Spittelberg’s many Christmas market stalls and its winding side streets, it can be a mission to choose a bite between the many dumpling stalls, wurst and kartoffel stands. Keep an eye out for Knödleria and their tasty dumplings, inspired by South Tyrolean food. You can’t go wrong between the Kaspressknödel – a flat pressed cheese and bread dumpling, or the Spinat-Käse/Speck knödel – dumplings with spinach and cheese or bacon! Cheese haters look away.
Culture spotting: A short walk will take you towards the Leopold Museum, which houses a great number of artworks by Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt, as well as the Rush of Colour exhibition. Plus, don’t miss the rest of Spittelberg’s Christmas market!
