Havens was a folk guitarist and singer who became famous for his songs and his rousing, energy-filled performances and it was for this reason that he opened the legendary music festival in 1969.
He played a near three-hour set and become an icon forever associated with the hippy event that defined not just a generation but an era.
“Beyond his music, those who have met Havens will remember his gentle and compassionate nature, his light humour and his powerful presence,” Havens’ family said in a statement.
He played for the likes of the Dalai Lama and former US president Bill Clinton, and collaborated even with UK dance group Groove Armada.
He passed away at his home in Jersey City in the state of New Jersey after suffering a heart attack.
