Hopes of an Indian summer were dashed as high winds and torrential downpours have caused havoc across northern England. With more than 75 weather warnings in place, hundreds of people spent last night in temporary accommodation, as roads were closed and public transport systems came to a standstill.
Three hundred properties have flooded across the country since the weekend. Forty homes were evacuated in Morpeth, Northumberland (above) and a row of houses in Newcastle are close to collapse.
A further 20mm-40mm of rain is still expected to fall today, however from then on the weather is expected to ease off up north. The bad news though is that it is headed south.
