Teenage fans of X Factor boy band One Direction had to be treated for injuries after a crush to get close to the lads.

The group, accompanied by mentor Simon Cowell, performed a free open-air concert in Wolverhampton’s Queen Square in front of nearly 4000 fans last night.

But it was all a bit too much for admirers of the five singers, who rushed to get a glimpse of them on stage.

Security guards had to pull some of the 35 hurt fans from the huge crowd and were seen lifting one faint-looking girl out to give her some air.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service told the Sun newspaper that most of the injuries were due to “the effects of the cold and over-excitement”.

The group, including Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan, have become heartthrobs to thousands of teenage girls across the country since appearing on the talent show.

Their performance in Wolverhampton, where Payne grew up, was part of a homecoming before this week’s final.
