Producers of the this year’s Oscars have decided to ditch the in-show performances of the Best Original Song nominees promoting fans to call for the Muppets, and their song Man or Muppet, to be reinstated in to the proceedings.

The decision was made to save time and give the show a quicker, pacier feel. However, there are many who have bemoaned the fact that Kemit and co – who run their own theatre!! -  will not get the chance to shine on the big stage.

Fans have taken to Twitter, as has The Muppets writer and co-star Jason Segel and his pal Judd Apatow, the man behind The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, to voice their disapproval. If you want to see the Muppets perform in the show then get on it at @TheAcademy.

9,000 people and counting have signed up to celeb blogger Perez Hilton’s online petition, with rumours suggesting there could be room for manoeuvre is there if enough momentum behind the calls for the Muppets reinstatement.

Man or Muppet was written by New Zealander and Flight of the Conchords star Bret McKenzie, who has said of the decision to demote his and his furry friends’ song: “It’s a shame, maybe I’ll bring a muppet with me, just in case. I’ll put a muppet in my pocket and do it from my seat.”
