According to reports, 11 commercial aircraft have gone missing from Tripoli International Airport in Libya, which was the scene of a fierce battle that ended last week, when fighters from the Dawn of Libya coalition captured the airport and aircraft belonging to the state-owned Libyan Airlines and Afriqiyah Airways.
A US State Department official told the Washington Free Beacon: “There are a number of commercial airliners in Libya that are missing. We found out on September 11 what can happen with hijacked planes.”
There is no official confirmation that the planes were stolen, but US House Homeland Security Chairman Michael McCaul warned on Tuesday that Islamic fundamentalists may attempt an attack, claiming the US is on “a higher state of alert”.
