The 15-year-old was hit by the bolt at Hallett Cove this afternoon, Australian time, and was conscious when taken to Flinders Medical Centre by ambulance.

Severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued for much of the state, in particular the Adelaide metropolitan area and its immediate vacinity.

A statement from the Bureau of Meteorology said at least 82,544 lightning strikes have been recorded over 30 hours in South Australia, and they’d sparked at least four bushfires.

“Scattered thunderstorms are occurring with a strong frontal system which is expected to move across central and eastern parts of SA during this afternoon and evening. Some of these thunderstorms are likely to be severe with damaging wind gusts and very heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding. There is also a risk of large hailstones north of about Whyalla,” the statement said.
