The all-rounder would have taken the new ball with James Anderson but didn’t take the field after making 24 with the bat.

Instead Broad was in the sheds icing the injury in the hope he can play a part in the match.

Steve Finn, who took the new ball instead and stagged two top order Aussie wickets admitted he, Anderson and spinner Graeme Swann will have a bit more work to do if Broad doesn’t making out into the middle to bowl.

Broad cops a Pattinson missile in the shoulder

“The extent of the damage, I don’t know,” he said. “He’ll receive treatment overnight and he’ll come back on Thursday when we’ll see how he is.

“We’re hoping he’ll be fit. If not I’ll have to bowl a few more overs, I think, and we’ll just have to rotate ourselves.”

Broad described his condition as “a bit ropey”.

Meanwhile, Australia’s own quick-bowling all-rounder Shane Watson ended day one worse for wear with a “niggle” that meant he only bowled four overs.

“I’m presuming he’s going to bowl in the second innings. He’s got a lower leg problem. We’ll see how he goes,” Australian coach Darren Lehmann said.

UPDATE: Broad has passed a fitness test after a nets session this morning and is expected to bowl as England defend their 215-run total.
