Cafe & Tapas

The scene: Roadside diner meets Mediterranean eatery. Seriously, the ambience here is non-existent and the less said about the flimsy serviettes, the better.

The grub: What Cafe & Tapas lacks in decor and overall atmosphere it more than makes up for with its food.

I always thought of pintxos (snacks served on little slices of bread) as poor man’s tapas, but C&T converts me with such luscious offerings as the goats cheese with caramelised onion and orange marmalade, and the Cantabrico anchovies, served with pepper and olive oil.

From the tapas menu I also enjoy the tender beef mini burgers, which live up to their name, and the delectable Iberico ham croquettes.

Behind the bar: Pretty much all the alcohol on offer here – spirits, wines and beers – hails from Spain.

Bill please: Tapas start at £2.30 per item. Good value.

Verdict: Don’t judge this tasty restaurant by its nondescript frontage.
