Passengers heard a loud band after take-off, and saw that part of the wing had broken off.

Telegraph features writer Cole Moreton was on board the flight, and said that passengers had pointed out the damaged wing to cabin crew.

“The bang made people jump and was alarming – then we sat there thinking this isn’t right, surely?” he said.

The plane circled the Thames Estuary before landing safely at London City.

Emergency services came to meet the plane after it landed on the runway, and all 60 passengers and the crew were unharmed. They were then re-directed onto another flight for Florence and left with a two-hour delay.
