Flooding in Cornwall after severe weather hit has left people trapped in their cars and houses overnight.
Heavy rain and gale-force winds have led to flooding, closing main roads and triggering landslides. Train services have been disrupted and some schools closed.
Devon and Cornwall police said they are dealing with a “major flooding incident” after drains were overwhelmed by downpours and villages were swamped with water.
In the St. Austell area, where water is several feet deep in some places, police said that people had been left trapped in their cars and homes overnight.
Search and rescue helicopters have been dispatched to offer assistance and people are being advised not to travel.
An Environment Agency spokesman said: “This is a serious incident and our thoughts are with those people whose homes have flooded.
“The Environment Agency has deployed teams to check river flood defences and to assist emergency services with the recovery process.”
A spokesman from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said coastguard teams were working with emergency services, with the incident elevated to “gold command”.
Bodmin, Luxulyan, Lostwithiel, Mevagissey, Par, St Austell, St Blazey and St Blazey Gate have been badly affected.
Tourist attraction, The Eden Project, is closed for the day.
