Ebook prices set to plummet after price fixing case

The Justice Department has alleged that Apple conspired with HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin, Simon & Schuster and Hachette to ramp up the cost of digital books on Apple’s iPad — and across the whole industry as a result.

According to the lawsuit filed by the department, ebook prices went up an average of about £1.25 to about £1.90 in a three-day period in early 2010, thanks to the secret agreement.

The deal is thought to have been a bid to stop Amazon – which has slashed prices to bump up sales of the Kindle – dominating the ebook market.
