Electric Cinema, Portobello Rd

Mutliplexes are all well and good for enormous tubs of over-priced popcorn and sticky carpet underfoot but if you’re after a more comfortable, less cookie-cutter experience, then be sure to swing past the Electric, which is about halfway up Portobello Road.

The Electric was built over 100 years ago and is one of the oldest buildings in the country designed specifically as a picturehouse. It closed down for a decade or so in the 1990s but, following some costly reburbishments, was reopened as a boutique cinema where audiences can rent two-seat sofas for extra comfort.

The Electric generally offers an eclectic program, with a skew towards independent and arthouse films. This week, The King’s Speech is showing, so drop in for a cinema experience with a touch of class.
