“Does it hula hoop by itself? Hardly a workout.” In fact, the hoops aren’t electric so much as battery-operated, and the fanciest thing they do is light up.

Otherwise, it was up to me and my graceless belly to keep the hoop going throughout the 45-minute class.

I’ve never been able to hula hoop, and honestly I was afraid I’d make a fool of myself.

The class started with crunches and hip exercises. After about 10 minutes, we grabbed our hoops and got started.

I did admittedly drop my hoop a few times, but pretty soon I was able to keep it going.

Something clicked, and I gained full control of the thing.

lt a joyful, childlike sense of accomplishment, and the giant grin on my face probably made me look as daft as my moves.

The real challenge began when we started marching and dancing while hooping. I dropped the device repeatedly, but laughed throughout my workout.

I don’t think exercise has ever been this fun. Go online for a free trial class; classes on Mondays at 8pm are for Gymbox members only.
