John Simpson Kirkpatrick, 22, is a key part of the “Anzac legend”.
A stretcher bearer with the Anzacz, he is best known for using a donkey to carry wounded soldiers from the frontline to the beach for evacuation.
He worked for almost a month, often under fire, until he was killed.
Originally from England, Kirkpatrick had jumped ship while in Australia in 1910 but joined the Anzacs when wore broke out in the hope of being sent back to England.
