What’s the show about?

I don’t dictate what the show is about. Accessible art is so aggressive. I present the audience with disparate ideas and let them work it out. Most conclude it’s about nothing.

Who inspired you to take to the stage?

A French comic called Raymond Devos. He’d talk about being on the bus and the man sitting next to him putting his hand in his (Raymond’s) pocket then getting off and forgetting to take his hand with him. His stuff was surreal but played to prime time Sixties TV audiences.

Where was your first show?

At the University of Reading. Four students put on our own show. It went well ‘til people started laughing. That messed me up.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen?

Seeing a man walk backwards down a country lane in Ireland.

What’s your favourite joke?

“Sponges grow in the ocean. That kills me. I wonder how much deeper they would be if that didn’t happen.” (US stand-up Stephen Wright).
