This competition will allow the lucky winners to join a community dig for half a day at a Clerkenwell site, where Crossrail archaeologists recently unearthed a Black Death burial ground.
The project will give locals the chance to dig deeper into their history to discover artefacts from the grounds of one of London’s best preserved examples of a Tudor mansion, built in the middle of an emergency burial ground.
The Charterhouse will open the archaeology excavations to the public on July 24 and 25, and will include opportunities for children to take part in specially constructed archaeology dig boxes not associated with the burial ground (lucky – nobody wants their child running amok in a recently-excavated grave).
