Attacks on Gaza have intensified and the Israeli Prime Minister explained that he plans an increase in military operations as long as there is still a threat.
The UK and US have accepted the strikes against Gaza after militants had launched rockets from inside the Palestinian enclave towards Jerusalem.
“Israel has every right to expect that it does not have missiles fired into its territory,” explained Obama.
He went onto explain that there was an “ever escalating number of missiles that were landing not just in Israeli territory but in areas that are populated.
“There is no country on earth that would tolerate missiles raining down on its citizens from outside its borders.”
The US president went on to explain that he would prefer some other kind of retaliation against the launch of these rockets from militants in to Israel. As Israeli military air strikes have and wil cause further tragedy in Gaza.
“It’s not just preferable for the people of Gaza. It’s also preferable for Israelis, because if Israeli troops are in Gaza, they’re much more at risk of incurring fatalities or being wounded,” said the US president.
British foreign secretary William Hauge explained that the militant group Hamas should have “principal responsibility” for the current upheaval of peace. The way Israel now deals with the current situation will be paramount.
Secret talks in Egypt in an attempt to reach a ceasefire are believed to include Nabil Shaath, a close aide to the Palestinian president and Mahmoud Abbas, Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization.
