Petronas Twin Towers and Menara KL communications tower are famous landmarks of Kuala Lumpur. At 452m high, the iconic Petronas towers are officially the world’s tallest twin buildings and featured in the movie Entrapment starring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Visit the famous skybridge on the 41st floor and feel like you’re on top of the world. The view from the KL tower observation level at 276m is also spectacular.
The melting pot
One of the most interesting things about Malaysia is its mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian culture and tradition. From people wearing traditional Muslim dress to young women in short skirts there’s a mix in Kuala Lumpur that makes it a vibrant city.
Down in Chinatown
Watches, handbags, rip-off CDs or any type of knick-knacks are available in Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown. The best bit is that the stallholders aren’t nearly as persistent as in other countries, so you can browse without the hassle. The crowded and busy Petaling Street has everything, but even if you’re not looking to do any shopping, head there for the food, ranging from local coffee shops to noodle houses.
Golden Triangle
Kuala Lumpur is one of the fastest developing cities in the world yet the old town is so far managing to preserve much of its character. It used to be said that there was little to do at night beyond perhaps a G&T in the hotel bar or, if you were desperate enough, a visit to a karaoke club but today the nightclub strip in Kuala Lumpur’s ‘Golden Triangle’ business district is one of the most vibrant in Asia.
The old and the new
Probably the most striking thing about Kuala Lumpur is the blend of old and new, tradition and modernity. The historic colonial buildings (notably around Merdeka Square) contrast with luxury hotels and glorious skyscrapers.
Masjid Negara
Masjid Negara is one of South-East Asia’s biggest mosques, and a very interesting place to check out. Worshippers are very happy to discuss Islam with tourists who show an interest in the faith.
Little India
This is a great neighbourhood in which to take a wander and check out the shops and restaurants.
