The 17-year old from Elmwood Park in Chicago was admitted to Loyola Hospital on Sunday afternoon, American time with a gunshot wound to the left side of his groin.
He reportedly told police that the gunshot wound had been inflicted on him by two men dressed as ninjas.
The teenager confessed to shooting himself by accident after police officers investigated the incident further and found no evidence to support the boy’s fanciful story.
Medical staff at the hospital were also quick to diagnose the gunshot wound as self inflicted.
The boy subsequently said that he had been driving around with his friends when the gun had accidentally gone off in his lap.
Officials are working to determine where the incident occurred to determine which police agency has jurisdiction over the case.
