A 32-year old jumped into the sea, despite red flags warning of dangerous undercurrents, to save a four year old who stuggling in a rubber ring.

Moments after delivering the child to safety the man had a heart attack and died.

Lifeguards and paramedics tried to resuscitate the man, from Sutton, Surrey, but he could not be saved.

“They were pumping water out of his lungs,” one witness said.

“When the helicopter landed people were still optimistic.

“But sadly nothing could be done to save him and he died right there on the beach.

“He died a hero.”
