A minimum price is targeting shops that heavily discount their drinks, rather than drinks sold in pub – which, it’s believed, will not be affected.

It’s been estimated that the new minimum price of alcohol will raise the average can of been or cider to £1.12, due to the fact that the average can of larger (based on 4.5%) contains around two units of alcohol.

In order to undercut the competition, shops have been selling alcohol at a loss, for as little as 20 pence a can.
The government believes that this encourages the public to drink more and charge up on booze prior to a night out. They have dubbed it “pre-loading”.

It’s predicted that having a minimum price will save up to 900 lives per year, and reduce crime levels.

Dr Vivienne Nathanson, from British Medical Association, is all for a minimum price on alcohol:

“Alcohol is a dose-related poison, in other words the more you drink the more harm it causes, so by reducing the amount they are drinking over the safe limit you are helping to save them,” she told BBC Radio 4.
