Heavy snow will continue to fall today, mainly in Scotland and northeast England. London and Southern England can expect more snow tonight.

In the London area, Southern Essex and Surrey have seen some of the freshest snowfall and major travel disruption has been reported. Up to 15cm of snow has already fallen in some areas.

The freezing weather should begin to let up tomorrow with lighter snowfall and less icy winds. However severe weather warnings remain in place today for the East Midlands, Yorkshire and Humber and the North East.

Travel disruption

Britain’s transport network has been predictably thrown into chaos by the snow and icy conditions.

Last night, hundreds of motorists were stranded in Kent when several major roads were closed due to ice and snow.

Edinburgh and Gatwick airports have closed and at Manchester airport travellers can expect delays and possible cancellations.

Southeastern Trains said that several of its trains were stuck for about five hours due to problems with ice and snow on the tracks.
