The British-born but Australian raised actress, last seen on the big screen opposite Leonardo DiCpario in J Edgar, has been cast in director Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Caught in Flight.
The film, which is to go into production in the UK laters this year, will tell the story of the last two years of Princeess Diana’s life, as she evolved into her role as a global humanitarian and campaigner.
Watts says of the film: “’it is such an honour to be able to play this iconic role – Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.’
Hirschbiegel, who was Oscar nominated for his 2004 film Downfall, which portrayed the final days and hours of Adolf Hitler in his Berlin bunker, commented: ‘I am delighted to have such a truly exceptional actress who embodies the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana.’
