Paramedics made desperate attempts to revive the woman but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The London Evening Standard reports that the woman is believed to have been the first person to take the hoax call from 2Day FM, a radio station based in Sydney.

In the recording of the call the nurse can be heard almost instantly transferring the call when the DJ claims to the Queen inquiring after her granddaughter.

Scotland Yard said: ”Police were called at about 9.35am on Friday December 7 to reports of a woman found unconscious at an address in Weymouth Street, W1.

“The London Ambulance service attended and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Inquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances of the incident.

“The death is being treated as unexplained.”

The Daily Mail reports source which claim the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Update: The nurse who has apparently committed suicide has been named as Jacintha Saldanha. In a statement the Edward VII hospital said: ““t is with very deep sadness that we confirm the tragic death of a member of our nursing staff, Jacintha Saldanha.”

Saldanha had worked at the hospital for four years.

Chairman of King Edward VII’s Hospital, Lord Glenarthur said: “This is a tragic event. Jacintha was a first class nurse who cared diligently for hundreds of patients during her time with us. She will be greatly missed.”
