The Mars Volta (Warner)

One of those below-the-radar bands that sells more records, tickets and T-shirts than you might expect, The Mars Volta have built an impressive fanbase by being, essentially, Muse without the tunes.

Octahedron contains more of the same nonsensical lyrics, baffling titles, widdly-widdly guitar solos and OTT musical pyrotechnics that have both highlighted and blighted their four previous records.

If this is your sort of thing, you’ll have made their acquaintance already.
