Colman won best supporting actress for her role in the BBC’s Accused (Mo’s Story) and for best female in a comedy for the BBC’s Olympics sitcom Twenty Twelve.

“I’m  not even the funniest one in our programme,” a clearly shocked Colman said of her comedy win, which saw her triumph against Miranda Hart  (Miranda), Julia Davis (Hunderby) and her Twenty Twelve co-star Jessica Hynes.

Colman was so overawed by the honours that she let slip a four-letter expletive when she walked on to the stage to collect her second award, mumbling, ‘Fuck’; before composing herself and apologising.

Elsehwhere, Sheridan Smith won Best Leading Actress for her portrayal of the wife of famous great train robber Ronnie Biggs in Mrs Biggs.

Ben Wishaw, who plays Q in the latest Bond movie, Skyfall, won best Leading Actor for Richard II (The Hollow Crown).
