We have to thank Qantas, which today began flights on its new Sydney – Hamilton Island service.

The Flying Kangaroo will operate three flights a week on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday during peak season (July and September through to January) and bi-weekly services on Wednesday and Sunday off peak.

It has been almost 10 years since Qantas flew between Sydney and Hamilton Island and Qantas Domestic CEO Lyell Strambi said the airline was delighted to be flying back to the region.

“Our customers told us that they wanted direct access to the Whitsundays on a premium leisure service from Sydney. Today we respond to that demand and complement Jetstar’s existing flights as part of our two-brand strategy,” said Mr Strambi.

“Sydney is the gateway to Australia for millions of Qantas passengers every year. These passengers can now enjoy direct access to one of the country’s most iconic holiday destinations.”

The airline recently flew the cast and crew of hit TV show Modern Family to the region as part of a two week filming stint in Australia to promote iconic tourist destinations.
