I’m here to try the humble cheesesteak. A dish I’ve been told is the icon of Philly culture; synonymous with the city, its people and history. The iconic sandwich is made of bread, steak, onions and secret recipe cheese, known as ‘Wiz’.
Ordering was simple, you pick your size, select your cheese and whether you want it garnished with onions. I opted for the half Cheesesteak with onions and Wiz alongside an order of fries with Wiz.
The steak is sliced and sizzled right in front of your eyes, so even before you get that first taste the whiff of flavour had already awakened my taste buds, and, boy, was it worth the wait.
The hot cheese oozed out of the roll waiting to be eaten, while the sweetness of the onions was the perfect complement to the smoky steak. The portion of fries were plentiful; next time I’ll order them without the Wiz due to sauce overload.
A whole Philly Cheesesteak from Liberty costs £8, and half costs £5. Other Philly classics on offer include South Philly Style Italian Roast Pork sandwiches, Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteak and, for dessert, ice cream sandwiches and Philly style Cannelloni, pumped with ricotta filling right before the customer for freshness. Gluten free options are also available.
As I’ve never had the pleasure of trying an authentic Philly Cheesesteak, it would be wrong of me to comment on the authenticity of the food. However, what I can say is: the next time you’re looking for your American food fix – come here. Top quality food at incredibly reasonable prices.
