Barcelona residents are so fed up with tourists wearing bikinis and bathing shorts in the streets that they have launched a campaign to encourage them to cover up when they leave the beach.

The local authority has put up posters in markets, museums, offices and other public buildings, showing a couple in swimming costumes with a red line across it, next to a fully-dressed couple without the red line.

Spaniards believe it is offensive to only wear bathing clothes when shopping or visiting a restaurant.

“We want to make people understand that it’s an attitude that we don’t like, that it’s not banned or punishable but that it’s something that we don’t think is civil,” said a spokeswoman for the City Hall.
