A picture showing a shark swimming down a flooded street in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Irene has been slammed as a hoax after it was videoed and posted on Youtube.

The photo appears to be taken from a car and shows a seven-foot shark swimming down a street which was flooded after Hurricane Irene swept through earlier this week.

The photo has attracted lots of attention but, sadly for those getting excited about it, seems likely to owe more to Photoshop than to a freak of nature.

The caption on the video reads: "Seriously!!!!! Hurricane Irene placed a shark in the street in Puerto Rico! Truely Amazing."

But maybe not.

Youtube viewers have been quick to detect the fraud.

“Americans are so hysterical about this storm that they'll just about believe anything. Since when has the waters in a storm surge or flooding been so clear and clean?! They should be muddy and filled with debris. Dumb, dumb, dumb,” ranted blurredsilence.

While vcotty wrote: “IT IS FAKE… IT WAS A FRIEND OF MINE HERE IN PUERTO RICO WHO MADE IT… THE SHARK COMES FROM ANOTHER PHOTOSHOP PICTURE WHERE A SHARK IS AFTER A GUY IN A KAYAK… xD My friend is having a BLAST!! LMAO!!!”

Embarrassingly, the Puerto Rico shark photo made it onto 7 News and was reportedly seriously by several news outlets.
