DeGraw received an unfavourable public vote and a dismal score of 19 from the judges.

The I Don’t Want To Be singer is the fourth contestant to leave the dance competition, which is the US equivalent to Strictly Come Dancing.

Before the show, Gavin admitted he and professional partner Karina Smirnoff would be lucky to survive the drop.

He said: “That would be quite an escape. We’re experiencing an Alcatraz moment right now, a lot of water and a lot of sharks. So hopefully someone will let us on their boat.”

After their elimination was announced, Gavin said: “This show gave me another perspective.

“It gave me an opportunity to step outside of my element into someone else’s element and realise what a big pair of shoes they actually are.”

Head judge Len Goodman was unimpressed with Gavin’s performance in his dance duel with fellow competitor Jaleel White, saying: “What we are trying to safeguard is the integrity of the dance!”

The night featured an appearance by singer and actress Selena Gomez, who performed her new hit single Hit the Lights.

The eight remaining celebrity contestants, including Welsh classical singer Katherine Jenkins, will dance to Motown music next week.

That night will see performances from Smokey Robinson, The Temptations and Martha Reeves.

The other stars left in the competition are music legend Gladys Knight, Jaleel White, Roshon Fegan, William Levy, Melissa Gilbert, Maria Menounos and Donald Driver.

Tennis great Martina Navratilova was the first celebrity to be eliminated.
