London’s Victoria tube station has been closed after a strange smell was reported and eight people complained about headaches and nausea.
London Fire Brigade, paramedics and British Transport Police (BTP) were called to the station and four of those affected by the ‘smell’ took themselves to hospital.
The BTP said that no hazardous substances had been found, but the area was evacuated as a safeguard. However mainline and bus stations are open and tube trains are passing through the station without stopping.
The offensive smell is thought to come from a temporary ticket office and although it was not being treated as dangerous, evacuated passengers were obviously frightened.
Ambi Sitham told the BBC: “They had evacuated shops in the area. I felt terrified. I am still feeling very shaken. The smell was funny and chemical.”
Meanwhile a statement from British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to a London Underground ticket office at Victoria rail station… after staff reported an unusual smell.
“Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service are also on scene after a number of members of staff reported feeling unwell.
“Firefighters from the London Fire Brigade carried out tests which established there were no hazardous substances present. A gas leak has been ruled out.”
