Campbell was speaking after viewing footage filmed by the BBC, who had spent a month filming football matches in both of the nations, during which they witnesses anti-Semitism, monkey chants directed at black players and even Nazi salutes on the terraces.
Uefa has said that awarding this summer’s European Championships to the twin host nations gives them a chance to improve their images and the chance for football to tackle issues such as racism head on.
However, Campbell, after viewing the BBC’s footage, disagreed: “I think they [Uefa] were wrong [to award Ukraine and Poland the championships], because what they should say is that ‘if you want this tournament, you sort your problems out. Until we see a massive improvement… you do not deserve these prestigious tournaments in your country.’”
