Tian Tian was artificially inseminated in April of this year and hormone and protein levels indicate that she could very well be pregnant.

“It’s hugely exciting,” the zoo’s giant panda programme director Iain Valentine told the BBC.

“There’s never been a baby panda born in the UK.”

Tian Tian arrived in Edinburgh two years ago as part of a ten year long stay at the zoo. Two previous attempts for Tian Tian to mate naturally with the zoo’s male panda, Yang Guang, have failed leading to this spring’s artificial insemination attempt.

The discovery of the possible pregnancy was made by analysing her urine.
