The Royal Flying Doctor service has reported that a surfer is in hospital both his hands were bitten off in a shark attack. Sean Pollard, 23, was surfing off Wylie Bay Beach at the seaside town of Esperance in Western Australia.
The Flying Doctor Service flew him by jet to Perth Hospital after the attack cost him most of one arm, the other hand in the attack and left a leg seriously lacerated.
A shoot to kill order following the attack resulted in the killing of a four-metre shark found in the area and thought to be the culprit.
The Australian reported Esperance shire president Malcolm Heasman as saying that the “holidaymaker” was being watched from the beach by his girlfriend, Claire Oakford, when he was attacked at about 11am.
He reported: “He was assisted from the water by another surfer who was there who saw the incident happen and obviously ran to assist.
“He got onto the Wylie Bay car park and fortunately there was an off-duty ambulance officer from Albany who was available and rendered some first aid which I’m sure has greatly contributed to the man’s comfort and maybe his health as well.”
