The Artist sweeps Oscars – winners and losers in full

Dujardin enters the record books for winning the top acting award after uttering just three words in the whole film. The film (director Hazanavicius, and co-stars Berenice Bejo and Dujardin – above), also picked up a further two awards for best score and best costumes. 



Meryl Streep won her third Oscar for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, saying, “When they called my name I had this feeling I could hear half of America going ‘Not her again’”



Christopher Plummer picked up the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Beginners, in which he plays a father who comes out as gay after the death of his wife, and Octavia Spencer won best supporting actress for The Help, and received a standing ovation during her acceptance speech. 



Best adapted screenplay went to Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash for The Descendants, which starred George Clooney, and The Muppets took home the best original song award. Martin Scorsese’s Hugo picked up five Oscars, most of which were in technical categories such as best visual effects and best sound editing. 



A Separation won the best foreign language film award, with the film’s director Asghar Farhadi collecting the award from Sandra Bullock, Woody Allen won best original screenplay for Midnight in Paris and Rango was awarded best animated film, the film’s director Gore Verbinski winning for his first directing gig on an animated feature. 



First time Oscar nominee Michel Hazanavicus took to the stage to thank The Artist’s dog Uggie – who has been embraced as much by audiences as the film’s human stars – before adding “I  don’t think he cares.”



Dujardin added: “Thank you to the Academy. It’s funny because in 1929, it wasn’t Billy Crystal but Douglas Fairbanks who hosted the first Oscars ceremony. Tickets cost $5 and it lasted 15 minutes. Times have changed.”



Billy Crystal hosted the glittering show joking “This is my ninth time – just call me War Horse.” Crystal had been installed as host for the 84th Oscars after previous host Eddie Murphy withdrew.
