The Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner replaces Damon and is joined by Edward Norton and Rachel Weisz.

The Bourne Legacy is an all-new story from Tony and Dan Gilroy based on the universe by Robert Ludlum. Rather than simply reboot the franchise with a fresh face, the events of the first three Bourne films will somehow trigger the mess Renner’s character finds himself in.

Michael Clayton moviemaker Tony Gilroy, who wrote the screenplay for the first three Bourne installments, was hired to take over frompaul Greengrass who quit after making the first three Bourne movies with Damon.

Damon said he only wanted to return to play Jason Bourne if Greengrass was at the helm. He was the axed.

“I found out they’re making another when somebody saw it on the Internet. Nobody bothered to call me,”  he said last year.

“I”m not in it, but even so, they’ll work Bourne into the title, I guess. Universal just wants to call everything the Bourne something. So I guess they are trying to make another franchise and as they say, ”It isn’t over until it’s over”,” he added.

There was a generally positive response from fans of the franchise.

@sahilrix tweeted: “Holy mother! The new ‘Bourne Legacy’ trailer looks badass! As most things with Jeremy Renner & Ed Norton would”.

And @sugarpoultry tweeted: “The Bourne Legacy looks AMAZING!!!! I can’t wait to see this!

YouTube user lolahoneyforyou was unimpressed though.

“Ok, I think it’s unfortunate that the Bourne character will not be in this film. I am not digging the new character, hes just a mold of Bourne… Matt was the best… he is and will always be Jason Bourne, the one and only… This movie is one I can live without seeing.”

And @misfitstamara tweeted” Re: ‘The Bourne Legacy’ trailer – Jeremy Renner continues to make movies to get in a nerdy girl’s pants.” A jilted lover, perhaps?
