The 66-year old Mancunian began on screen in Coronation Street as a child before he moved to Los Angeles where he was cast as the lead in a TV show about a fictional pop group The Monkees.

The show was a success, and the band too, scoring a number of hit records. After the group disbanded Jones (pictured above with bandmates last year) continued to work as both a musician and actor but never managed a successful role as a solo performer.

The Monkees though continued to find success with subsequent generations embracing their songs (I%u2019m A Believer was a Nineties hit for EMF and Vic and Bob and features at the end of the hugely successful Shrek film. The group even reformed alst year and played at the Royal Albert Hall last May.
